Vienna, originally Vindobona, was founded as a Roman military settlement in the 1st century AD. Vienna reached its peak as the capital of the Habsburg Monarchy. After the fall of the monarchy, it became an independent federal state and at the same time the capital city of Austria. The most important sights include Schönbrunn, the summer residence of the imperial family, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg – the Habsburgs’ residential palace – and many others. Vienna is also an important cultural city. Festivals of classical and modern music, exhibitions, vernissages and other attractive cultural events take place here regularly. Vienna is a city worth visiting.
